Einshallah, we will continue with our study of Imam Nawawi's 40 hadith and will cover hadith's 2, 3, 8, and 22 this week. The goal is to cover the following themes:
1. Simplicity and universality - the foundations of Islam
2. Lowering ones expectations of others, raising ones expectations of themselves - the essence of conflict resolution
3. Facilitating new Muslims into Islam with a minimalist rather than maximalist approach
4. Understanding violence and war at the time of the Prophet and today
Will will cover cover hadiths 4, 14 and 17. The theme for that halaqa will be on various articulations of 'rights' in Islam.
1. Human rights - the rights of the accused, and the right of freedom of religion. Does Islam allow for a conscious rejection of it's followers, or meet apostasy with capital punishment?
2. Fetal rights - what consequences do Prophetic teachings and Quranic articulations of embryology have on rulings for abortion, contraception and stem-cell research?
3. Animal rights - what Qur'anic and Prophetic teachings shed light on the rights of animals. Do animals have feelings? Do they have a conscious? The Prophet's relationship with animals.
